2000 Season Review
Goalies
It was a banner year for goalies in a Revolution kit. The tandem of Jeff Causey and Juergen Sommer is easily the most talented in Revolution history, far from the days when Aidan Heaney and Jim St. Andre started in 1996. While Causey and Sommer were not flawless, they did not detract from the Revs' ability to win games.
Jeff Causey
Rating: B+
Jeff Causey had a career year in 2000. A career backup, Causey started the year between the sticks due to an injury to Juergen Sommer. He started 22 games this year and garnered a very respectable 1.55 GAA.
Causey showed a flair for the dramatic this year. He made most of the great saves, while sometimes letting softer ones into the net. He distrubted the ball well, and communicated well with his defenders. His performance this year was in the upper half of MLS keepers. Causey also acquired quite a reputation for saving penalties during the season.
Juergen Sommer
Rating: B
Sommer was acquired for a draft pick from Columbus to replaced the departed Walter Zenga. Things didn't quite work out that way for Juergen. While he had a decent year, he could not supplant Jeff Causey as the starting keeper.
Juergen played well when he got into the match. His distribution was good, especially his throws, which usually landed over half. He was solid, if unspectactular, in between the pipes. The main difference between Sommer and Causey was that Causey made the awesome saves, giving Causey the edge.
